Be a Guide

Guide making a difference for a visually Imparied walker

By joining us as a guide you will enjoy glorious walks, pub lunches, beautiful countryside and great company.

If you enjoy walking and want to share your experience with others, lend a hand and enjoy the immense rewards of seeing the outdoors through all your senses, being a guide with Sense Adventures could be just for you.

As a guide you may describe the scenery to your blind partner. This can enhance your own appreciation of your surroundings, encouraging you to look more closely.

Many visually impaired people have some sight and their vision and needs will vary. The main principle to being a good guide is to ask about each individual's specific needs.

We have an ongoing recruitment process for new volunteer guides that includes an interview, full training and DBS check. We have offered First Aid training to all volunteers through an independent provider to ensure we have at least two first aid trained volunteers on all of our walks.

Watch the training video below featuring Dee, Founder and Director, and Luke, a Sense Adventures guide, for tips and advice on guiding.

Testimonial from Ann, a volunteer guide:

"I have been volunteering as a sighted guide for a few months now and I absolutely love it.  We have had great days [although not always with great weather!] meeting new people and their dogs and enjoying the Malvern hills. You don’t need to be an expert in sight loss, the person you are supporting will be able to explain how best to assist them. You do need to like dogs as well as people: the guide dogs get “time off” from their working duties on these walks and they really enjoy their freedom! Add in a picnic lunch or maybe a café for tea and cake…why not get your boots on and come with us next time? "
